STORYLINE
Early voting began on Thursday morning in Iraq''s parliamentary election, which will elect a government that will guide the country as US forces go home and help determine whether Iraq can overcome its deep sectarian divisions.
Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis are expected to take part in early voting, a one-day session designed for those who might not be able to get to the polls on Sunday, when the rest of the country votes.
Early voters include detainees, hospital patients, and military and security personnel who will be working on election day.
In the southern city of Basra, Iraqi police and military personnel also headed to the polling stations to cast their votes.
Hospital patients and medics were able to vote in hospital wards.
Security in Baghdad was tight on Thursday as early polling got under way, but an explosion in a pile of rubbish near a crowded Baghdad market killed seven people, police said.
The blast happened about 500 yards from a polling station that was not taking part in early voting. But there were conflicting reports about the nature of the explosion.
Around the country, hundreds of thousands of police and military have been flooding the streets to prevent attacks by insurgents who have warned they would try to disrupt the vote.
The United Nations Assistance Mission to Iraq estimated that between 600-thousand and 700-thousand people could vote on Thursday.
About 19 (m) million of Iraq''s estimated 28 (m) million people are eligible to vote in the elections, which will take place in 16 countries around the world.
These are only Iraq''s second elections for a full parliamentary term since the 2003 US-led invasion ousted Saddam Hussein, leading to the eventual creation of the Shiite-dominated government in power today.
As part of the tightened security measures, officials in the western province of Anbar announced a vehicle ban on Thursday morning.
