1st May holds great significance for both the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra as both the states were formed on this very day 63 years ago.
How were the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra formed?
According to the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, boundaries for states within India are defined on the basis of languages.
Accordingly, the Bombay province from the British era was divided into two states – one where people primarily spoke Gujarati and Kutchhi and the other where people primarily spoke Marathi and Konkani.
The demand for separate states was spearheaded by the Sanyukta Maharashtra Samiti in Maharashtra and the Mahagujarat Movement in Gujarat.
The states of Maharashtra and Gujarat came into existence according to the Bombay Reorganisation act, 1960 enacted by the Parliament on 25 April, 1960 and the act came into effect on 1st May 1960.
The President and the Prime Minister of India have wished the people on the occasion.
