The overture is one of the highlights of the orchestra's repertoire. Composed by Johann Strauss II and performed for the first time in 1874 in the city of Vienna, this masterpiece contents typical elements of the traditional viennese musical heritage of the 19th century. A challenging and demanding masterpiece which is performed yearly at the Vienna State Opera and Volksoper Vienna around the New Years time.

The constant changes of the beat, the numerous accelerations, the colorful melodies and the rapid passages, require lots of experience and teamwork by the members of the orchestra. The Strauss Capelle Vienna is one of the few ensembles around the world keeping the original tradition of how these musical piece is supposed to be performed; with a passionate feeling for Strauss's music one can only learn from generation to generation.
