This film shows views of the Pian San Giacomo in Switzerland located on the A13, around 8km or so to the south of the San Bernadino Pass. The Cima di Barna stands to the east, around 2km distant as the crow flies. The mountain is 2,860m high and marks the border between Switzerland and Italy whilst below in the distance we have the village of Mesocco. To the west is the 2,650m high Piz de Trescolmen and here we can witness the end of the day with the sun behind this mountain.
This is December and for the first time ever I saw that the San Bernadino Pass was open - normally such a privelidge can be expected only in summer. Nonetheless I had taken the easy option and drove through the San Bernadino Tunnel.
The San Bernardino Pass rises to 2,066 metres and connects the German speaking Hinterrhein valley with the Italian speaking Mesolcina valley. Whereas the route had been used for hundreds of years, it was made significantly easier in 1967 when the San Bernardino road tunnel was completed. The tunnel is 6,596 metres long and although classified as a motorway which requires a vignette to be bought, it is only one carriageway in each direction with a speed limit of 80kmph and overtaking is not permitted. Nonetheless I have never seen a traffic jam there which is more than I can say for the St. Gotthard Tunnel. Nonetheless the tunnel is aged and looks it. A CHF236m plan to upgrade the tunnel was started in 1991 and completed 15 years later and there is now an escape tunnel for passengers in the event of a fire.
Below us we have the village of Mesocco and a route protected by many ancient castles which are clearly visible from the road and may provide an interesting tour for those interested in such things.
As can be seen the motorway here does offer facilities such as a picnic area with toilets and view point. I have passed this way on various occasions and I have never seen more than three vehicles parked here - it is as though people do not want to see the magnificent views!
Finally however as a responsible publisher I need to point out the dangers of travelling in Switzerland which can be read about in this article. This is something motorhome users need to consider before travelling to this country : [ Ссылка ]
