Athens in Greece - Exploring the Stoa of Attalos
The Stoa of Attalos Museum is an impressive building in the archaeological site of the Ancient Agora in Athens. Originally constructed from 159 BC until 138 BC, this building was donated to the Athenians by Attalus II, king of Pergamus, and his wife, as stated in a sign outside the Stoa. The building had two floors and two lines of marble columns on the ground floor.
The monument is 20 meters wide, 116 meters long and 25 meters high. Its facade on the ground floor has 45 columns of the Doric style externally and 22 columns of the Ionian style internally. The ground floor and the first floor had 21 rooms each, used as shops and study rooms.
In fact, the Stoa of Attalos at the Agora was the first and largest shopping center of antiquity and became the main meeting point of the Athenians in that period.
It was destroyed during a siege in 267 AD by the Heruli and was restored in 1953-1956 by the American School of Classical Studies to host an archaeological museum.
