Most cyclocross races involve getting on and off your bike. You often need to dismount for features that are too difficult, or just plain impossible, to take on your bike. Nearly every set of stairs that you encounter in a 'cross race will fall into the 'impossible to ride category' and, now that you've got dismounting, remounting and shouldering dialled, running up a set of stairs or a steep bank is a great natural progression. Like everything else about cyclocross, it's all about preserving momentum. Bart Wellens, two-time elite world cyclocross champion (2003 and 2004), showed GCN how to attack a set of stairs.
