Towelhead a film by writer/director Alan Ball. My Review is next.
Hello I am Rachel Ganz from the Hollywood Report.
Towelhead centers around a 13 year old Lebanese-American girl named Jasira. Jasira is living with her mother who currently is living with her boyfriend. Jasiras mother discovers inappropriate behavior between her boyfriend and her 13 year old daughter. Jasira is then immediately sent to live with her father Rifat in Texas.
Rifat is a cold hearted, abusive and a poor parent. He shows very little love and respect for his daughter. Rifat verbally and physically abuses Jasira to the point of leaving her with bruises on her thighs. One night when Rifat is visiting his girlfriend Jasira is seduced and raped by Rifats 55 year old neighbor Mr Vuoso.
Towelhead was touted as a comedy but the sexual exploitation and rape of a 13 year old is not funny. I almost walked out of the movie at this point but remained only to fulfill my professional duties. I would not sit through this otherwise.
What was troubling was Mr Alan Balls script that followed.
Jasira became sexually active within days after of her rape. Its irresponsible for a filmmaker to incorrectly lead an audience to this behavior after a 13 year old is brutally raped. Jasira then initiates a sexual relationship with a black classmate. Any 13 year old girl who is just raped is not going to chase boys. Something traumatic of this nature is going to cause a girl to be reclusive, isolated and ashamed. Instead Mr Alan Ball is way off base and pervasively makes fun of a 13 year olds horrid experience into a comedy act. Very bad movie making.
Towelhead by Alan Ball had stellar acting but a very poor content in the script. Mr Ball did not do the necessary research on the subject of rape or could be showing some very illicit behavior. How can such material come from a mans mind and be portrayed on the big screen? I give the movie 3 out of 10 Hollywood Stars. The acting was very good but the story was totally inaccurate of a 13 year old girl following this traumatic experience.
