Just wanted to share my technique for disposing of grease. Here are some other helpful tips.
1. Never pour cooking grease/fat in the sink
2. With #1 being said, never pour hot cooking grease/fat/oil in the trash. Wait for it to cool.
3. Large amounts or large pieces of food should be scraped into the trash. Use the disposal for those bits of food that cannot be scraped away. (Between trash days, when you don't want the food to become smelly or attract pests, you can throw food into old plastic store bags and put it into the freezer until trash pick-up day).
4. Run the garbage disposal every few days.
5. Got gnats or flies and want to clean your garbage disposal? First, fill it with ice cubes and a cup of rock salt, then run it for a minute for the natural abrasives to scrape away the gunk lining the inside of your disposal. Pour a cup of vinegar and a half-cup of baking soda into the disposal to kill bacteria, then (again, with the power off) scrub the flaps with an old toothbrush.
Please feel free to share your tips regarding sink/disposal care in the comments.
