(28 May 2015) U.S. and Cuban authorities have come to blows over independent journalism courses offered at the U.S. embassy in Havana.
The opening of the Cuban Embassy in Washington and its counterpart in Havana had raised expectations of a warming of relations between the two long-time antagonists, but contentious issues, such as the journalism courses, remain sore points for both sides.
Cuban authorities say the courses are a violation of the country's sovereignty, while the U.S. say the programmes are a normal procedure for a US State Department overseas.
However, for many ordinary Cubans, such outreach provides an opportunity where none existed before in Cuba's tightly controlled press.
Eleyn Ponjuan, a journalist in Cuba, says the courses, which are free, provide a valuable resource for those who could not usually afford such training.
The historic process of restoring long-severed diplomatic relationship between the U.S. and Cuba that began in December will likely come to a successful end in a matter of weeks, according to a US senator.
