Pros of Masters
1. Shorter program, 2 years
2. Less amount of student loans (you should be able to pay them off sooner than Psy.D, PhD usually have a stipend however so their programs are best in terms of cost efficiency)
Cons of Masters
1. Some states require you to be under supervision for a number of years even after grad school.
2. Some states might require you to put more hours in after graduating before being able to become licensed or certified (approximately another 2 years).
3. Less career opportunities in terms of teaching, private practice, and work facilities.
4. Lower salary than PhD, Psy.D.
5. Masters in counseling or social work, might have more freedom and career opportunities depending on the state than a masters in clinical psychology.
Pros of PH.D/Psy.D
1. A variety of job opportunities, military, hospital, counseling centers, private practice, schools, universities, corporate, etc.
2. Higher salary, competitive pay.
Cons of PhD/Psy.D.
1. Takes longer, anywhere from 4-6 years.
2. For Psy.D. more student loans, takes longer to pay them off.
