1. If your form was thrown off centre, it’s going to be very difficult to trim it evenly. If you do find you have a wobble you could use a Sureform tool to shave the sides, the base or the rim down to give you a level starting point. (Obvs it’s best to practice your throwing skills too😉)
2. Think about which part of the pot are you centring from initially? The larger the form, the easier it is for the foot to be subtly out of alignment with the rim, and for both of those points to be out of alignment with the shoulder. If you line up your rim - your base could be off and vice versa. In these cases it’s best to centre the shoulder of pot.
3. Use your hearing to help you trim. Flick the bowl with your finger; the deeper the thud and the more hollow it sounds - the less you have to trim. The higher pitch the sound the thicker your clay, the more you have to trim.
4. Create a slightly thicker footring to begin with, then if your tool slips and you accidentally gouge into it you have some leeway to trim it further to achieve your final shape.
5. I’m sharing loads more tips and techniques in my Patreon video this weekend. Entitled ‘Trouble Shooting whilst trimming’ If trimming ain’t your thang - this will help🙂 With practice you’ll learn to love it like I (now) do.
