▶ Title: Quantum simulations with one- and two-dimensional ion crystals
▶ Abstract:
Ion crystals illuminated with laser light are an interesting
engineered quantum system for exploring spin systems with long-range
interactions. Towards this end, lasers coupling the internal states to
collective motional modes of the ion crystal are used for realizing
effective spin-spin interactions where two long-lived electronic levels
encode a pseudo-spin ½ system. In addition to the entangling interactions,
strongly focused laser beams enable coherent control at the single-particle
level. I will present recent experiments with linear strings of up to 50
ions and discuss the prospect of extending these experiments to
two-dimensional ion crystals.
