Many electricians, especially new starters in the trade, will have a vague idea of voltage drop but may struggle with the concept, what causes it and more importantly, what can be done to make a bad reading into a good one.
The first step is to be able to perform the calculations correctly and this relies on us choosing the appropriate formula and the right tables from the regulations.
In this video we have included the formulas that are most relevant to voltage drop,
These include the standard formula that everyone is taught and a rarely taught but powerful calculation that you can use when little information about an existing circuit is available to you.
Then we have included three more formulas to calculate the maximum length of cable runs, the minimum cable sizes and the maximum currents that are permitted.
With an explanation of voltage drop and the range of formulas provided you should feel confident in calculating any voltage drop question after working through this video.
Additionally, if you are preparing to sit your 18th Edition Wiring Regulations exam then you can be almost certain that you will be asked to perform a voltage drop calculation in the exam. Know the information here and you should have little problem in the 18th Edition exam if a volts drop question comes up.
