The opening scene sees the arrival of a regular passenger service into Ryde esplanade from Ryde pier head to Shanklin. Two stops along from Ryde esplanade station is Smallbrook junction. This station is unique in that it has no public access via road, or footpath, but exists purely to provide a connection between two railway systems Smallbrook junction station was opened in 1991 to provide a connection between the Island line and the then recently extended heritage steam railway.
