El Proyecto Islero fue un programa secreto desarrollado por España en las décadas de 1960 y 1970, con el objetivo de crear una bomba atómica. Bajo la dictadura de Francisco Franco, y liderado por la Junta de Energía Nuclear (JEN), España buscaba aumentar su prestigio internacional y capacidad defensiva en plena Guerra Fría. Aunque el país construyó instalaciones nucleares y avanzó en la investigación, enfrentó varios obstáculos significativos. La presión internacional, especialmente de Estados Unidos, las amenazas de sanciones, los elevados costos y el cambio político tras la muerte de Franco en 1975 llevaron a la cancelación del proyecto. Con la transición a la democracia, el gobierno de Adolfo Suárez abandonó las ambiciones nucleares militares en favor de alinearse con los estándares internacionales de no proliferación. A pesar de no lograr su objetivo original, el Proyecto Islero contribuyó al desarrollo de la infraestructura y capacidad técnica en el campo nuclear de España, que se redirigió hacia fines pacíficos como la generación de energía. El proyecto refleja las complejas dinámicas políticas y económicas del desarrollo de armas nucleares y las dificultades enfrentadas por países en busca de unirse al club nuclear.
