LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (WKRC) - If you love the outdoors, Dec. 26 might’ve been a tough day for you, trying to decide whether to go skiing, golfing, canoeing or just lying out in the sun.
It was 62 degrees in much of the Tri-State Thursday. Of course in Greater Cincinnati, you don’t necessarily have to choose -- you can do them all in one day. Up at Perfect North Slopes, it was hard to believe the day after Christmas people were skiing in shorts and t-shirts. It may be the dead of winter, but it was all spring skiing.
“It’s nice out. It’s warm enough to wear shorts, so why not?!“ said 14-year-old Brody Lack. A perfect day at Perfect North -- full snow coverage. Evan Sweeney was only wearing a t-shirt.
“I’m about to take this off and go shirtless in a second. So, whatever happens, happens!” warned Sweeney.
The owner of the resort, Alex Perfect, says people were lighting up the phone to ask whether Perfect North was open. He says, heck yeah!
“We’ve got about 200 tower-mounted snow guns that just fire compressed water into the air and they freeze as it falls to create a deep snow-base here. That's going to continue to hang on and fight through these warm temperatures,“ Perfect said.
People who truly are in denial that it’s winter took to the water. It was a great day for canoeing, biking or just taking a stroll along the riverfront. And for those who thought they would have to wait until the spring to break out the golf clubs again, well, they received a little Christmas present.
We caught up with Joe and Mike Williams at Sugar Ridge Golf Club, about 10 minutes from Perfect North. Joe says if you’re golfing in December, you're usually shivering, and he says he's done that. But Mike says he's never golfed in weather like this on Dec. 26.
"It's nice," he said.
"Very nice," Joe agreed.
“Everyone has their new toys for Christmas," said Sugar Ridge owner Mike Faillace. "They're trying them out, and Mother Nature is helping us out big time.“
Back at the slopes, it was a great day for the first day on a snowboard for 7-year-old Crew Combs from Lebanon.
“What’s it like out here?" we asked Combs.
"Warm and fun," he answered.
Warm and fun -- that’s a good combination.
Perfect North is open until midnight several nights a week. Friday, Nick Goepper, the two-time Olympian who calls Lawrenceburg home, is holding a slopestyle competition and exhibition called the Nick Goepper Rail Jam. It goes from 7-9 p.m. Friday.
