Large mammals are some of the most charismatic of all wildlife, and protected areas large enough for them are crucial for their conservation, especially in Europe. At the edge of their northern range, in Scandinavia, the home range size of male Eurasian lynx can be thousands of square kilometres. Most lynx across Europe utilise smaller areas, but often only a few lynx live in hundreds of square kilometres, as they still have expansive territories. Protecting a large area for lynx can help to safeguard many of the species and processes which are important parts of that ecosystem. In the Ukrainian Carpathians, we are working together with national parks to assess lynx abundance and connectivity in order to enhance their conservation. First published June 2021.
