(6 May 2017) SOTHEBY'S, CHRISTIE'S PREVIEW SPRING ART SALE
Sotheby's and Christie's are kicking off the spring art season in New York City by featuring paintings and sculptures from the 20th and 21st centuries.
"In the contemporary side we have an amazing duo which leads our sale" said Gregoire Billault, head of the Contemporary art department at Sotheby's New York. The contemporary pieces include Lichtenstein's 'nude sunbathing' and the 'skull' by Jean-Michel Basquiat from 1982.
Leading the sales at Christie's auction house are paintings from Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso.
"We have an amazing array of Impressionist and Modern works coming up," Jessica Fertig, head of evening sales of Impressionist and Modern art at Christie's said.
"The sale is led by an extraordinary painting by Picasso, painted on his birthday in 1939 of one of his greatest muses, Dora."
The Impressionist & Modern art sale takes place on May 15th at Christie's and May 16th at Sotheby's.
The Contemporary art sale at Christie's is scheduled for May 17th with Sotheby's auction the following evening.
