PADI Emergency Weight Drop for the PADI IDC Course. A lot of PADI IDC candidates have questions on how to evaluate the PADI Emergency Weight Drop skill. PADI Platinum Course Director Marcel van den Berg demonstrates how to evaluate the PADI Emergency Weight Drop skill in your IDC course and get the maximum amount of points (5.0) for your PADI IE.

The PADI Emergency Weight Drop skill can be assigned on the PADI IE and should always be practiced on the PADI IDC as this is not only a more interesting skill on the PADI IE, but it is also one of the new skills of the revised PADI Open Water Diver course.
Hopefully this video helps explain how to perform the PADI Emergency Weight Drop during the PADI IDC and IE.
This is the PADI performance requirement (Objective) from the PADI Instructor Manual:
Emergency Weight Drop — During any dive, in either confined or open water, at the surface in water too deep in which to stand, with a deflated BCD, have student divers use the weight system’s quick release, to pull clear and drop sufficient weight to become positively buoyant.
How to perform and evaluate the PADI Emergency Weight Drop skill during your IDC course:
First of all this is a surface skill so I highly recommend to keep talking when you can as this is much more effective then signalling, it is more realistic and in the end it is just plain "rude" not talking to your students if you have an option.
I recommend to integrate the demo in your briefing and use this order in your PADI Emergency Weight Drop skill briefing on the PADI IDC and IE:
1. Objective
2. Value
3. Organisation
4. (Signals are not needed as you can talk and integrate signals in your speech)
5. Description combined with the skill demonstration
In this PADI Emergency Weight DropYouTube video I start with the skill demonstration followed by how to evaluate diving students performing the PADI Emergency Weight Drop skill on their IDC Course.
Demonstration:
- Start with putting your regulator in your mouth
- Start to deflate the BCD while kicking your legs
- Try to keep your upper chest above the water
- Then remove the weight belt and drop it while continuously kicking up.
During the PADI Emergency Weight Drop skill evaluation I recommend evaluating one person at the time. Have the Divemaster look after the other student(s).
