Tilt tests are used to evaluate syncope, which is the medical term for losing consciousness or passing out. There are three main types of syncope observed during tilt tests: cardioinhibitory, where the heart rate drops significantly; vasodepressor, where blood pressure decreases dramatically; and mixed, which combines both heart rate and blood pressure drops. All these fall under the category of vasovagal syncope. Interestingly, recent research has identified a neurogenic component, suggesting that the brain may trigger a fainting episode before blood pressure or heart rate reaches critical thresholds.
