Mauritius celebrated the Spring Festival of India, Holika Dahan, commonly known as Holi on the March, 13. It is a festival of colors occurring in March or April according to the Hindu calendar. It is meant to welcome the Spring and win the blessings of Gods for good harvests and fertility of the land. Holi 2017 was celebrated mostly in villages across the island.
Similar to all the Hindu festivals, Holi is also attached to many interesting myths. It is performed by burning Holika, the devil. Hindus celebrates the death of Holika so as to save king Prahlad, a sincere devotee of Lord Vishnu. There are various other activities related to the story of Prahlad, but the burning of Holika remains the most common one. As a whole, this story is a testament to the power of devotion over the evil.
