The 22nd US marine expeditionary unit staged a mock evacuation
in Brazzaville on Tuesday (6/5) in preparation for the real
thing in Zaire.
Unlike previous evacuation exercises, some of the marines played
the role of hostile forces that could be encountered in the
Zairean capital, Kinshasa.
SHOWS:
BRAZZAVILLE, CONGO 06 MAY, 1997
WS US marines in battle formation wearing gas masks and
holding M-26 machine guns;
CU marines pretending to be looters;
WS marines pretending to be looters and attacking marine force
with plastic bottles;
CU marines in gas masks;
VS exercise with marines battling other marines playing role
of looters;
VS marines securing helicopter rotor blades and tents during
storm;
SOT, Marine Commander Bob Anderson (ENGLISH), saying that
troops have been moved into place, ready for the evacuation.
CU Military badge on commander's uniform;
SOT continues, Cmdr. Anderson saying such a storm would tie
down the evacuation attempt because "it is counterproductive to
fly in bad weather."
