Watch again as development and Africa minister Andrew Mitchell appeared before the Foreign Affairs Committee to discuss Sudan as the UK starts a large-scale evacuation of its citizens.
The first flight evacuating British nationals from Sudan has taken off, Downing Street has said, as reports of “fierce battles” in West Darfur and fighting near Khartoum jeopardised the volatile ceasefire at the centre of the rescue effort.
As Sudan teeters on the verge of a protracted civil war, the thousands of British nationals trapped there were told to make their way to an airfield north of Khartoum “as soon as possible” on Tuesday afternoon.
The Committee will also hear from expert witnesses, including a former British Ambassador to Sudan, and a senior research fellow at Institute of Commonwealth Studies.
