Antique Victorian Scottish Longcase Regulator Clock by Robert Stewart, Glasgow
Circa 1860
Robert Stewart was in business at several addresses in Glasgow from 1850 - 1896
He was appointed to Queen Victoria in 1892.
The fine mahogany case with glazed door and side panels has a carved pierced pediment with pierced carvings below the dial and in the lower door corners. The backboard has well figured veneers, as does the large panelled plinth, there is a removable canopy that gives access to the movement.
The silvered dial with sight ring is of typical regulator layout, with an outer Arabic minute ring and separate subsidiary lower Roman hour dial with an Arabic seconds dial above it. The dial is signed for the maker, Robert Stewart, Glasgow, it has fine blued steel hands.
The eight day movement is of the finest quality. It has jewelled pallets to the deadbeat escapement, maintaining power, four round pillars and six wheel crossings to the wheel work.
The octagonal crystal pendulum jar, formally contained mercury, now has a silvered imitation mercury weight, it sits in a silvered frame with a gilt base and cover. and has a silvered pendulum rod with number engraved adjusting nut, which raises and lowers the pendulum. There is a blued steel pointer at the base of the pendulum which moves against a silvered brass beat plaque mounted to the backboard of the case. The brass cased weight hangs from a fine six spoke pulley and the pendulum is suspended from the cases backboard.
