Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that typically occurs during the autumn and winter months in the UK, when there’s less natural sunlight. Often referred to as “winter depression,” symptoms are more noticeable and severe during this time.
💡 What causes SAD?
While the exact cause of SAD isn’t fully understood, research suggests it’s linked to reduced sunlight exposure during shorter days. This lack of sunlight may disrupt the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that regulates key functions like:
Melatonin production: A hormone that helps control sleep and wake cycles, which may increase during darker months, causing sleepiness and fatigue.
