The traditional view is that getting a PhD will take you up to 5 years or more in some cases, but there is an alternative.
There's this newer type of doctoral study called a PhD by Portfolio (or PhD by Published Work), which is different from the traditional PhD. Instead of doing a big research project and writing a dissertation, you submit a bunch (Portfolio) of your published work for evaluation. This type of program has become more popular as people in fields like business medicine, education, arts, and engineering want their professional contributions to be recognized as equivalent to academic study.
The portfolio you submit includes articles, books, or other material you've written, along with a document explaining how all the pieces fit together and meet the standards of a traditional PhD. Basically, you have to show that your work is just as valuable and insightful as a regular PhD.
