This is the moment engineers lowered the 23-tonne Lower Castle Park bridge into place, creating a shared cycle and walkway for residents.
The new bridge – which is 24 metres long and four metres wide – was installed on Friday (11 November) as just part of a £50 million investment into road, cycle and pedestrian infrastructure in Colchester.
The new crossing over the River Colne creates vital links on the National Cycle Network as well as a more direct route from Colchester North Station to the town centre for cyclists.
Although the installation took around four hours in total, our timelapse video shows the vital 12 minute period when engineers lifted and aligned the bridge in place.
The original footbridge is just out of shot to the left-hand side of the camera. It remained open throughout the works to ensure no disruption to the public.
Engineers will return in December to remove the original bridge.
