Bangladesh: Muhammad Yunus' Govt Releases Al-Qaeda Linked Terror Group Chief Jashimuddin Rahmani
The caretaker government in Bangladesh, led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, has released Jashimuddin Rahmani, the leader of the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), an al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group. Rahmani, who was imprisoned for the murder of blogger Rajib Haider and faced additional charges under Bangladesh’s anti-terrorism laws, was freed on parole from Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail in Gazipur. He had been sentenced to five years in prison on February 15, 2013. ABT was banned in Bangladesh in 2015 during Sheikh Hasina's administration, but it was later rebranded as Ansar al-Islam, also banned in 2017. Rahmani’s release raises concerns for India, as ABT has been trying to strengthen its presence through sleeper cells, with several affiliated terrorists previously arrested in India.
