Does Weight Lifting Stunt Growth? The Research-Backed Facts
[ Ссылка ]
This is a very common question I get from those in their mid to early teens.
They're eager and motivated to begin a bodybuilding program but at the same time are worried that it will have a negative impact on their height growth as they get older.
But does weight training stunt growth? Or is this just another outdated myth that should be ignored?
First off, the way the body grows taller is through the lengthening of the long bones. This includes the bones of the upper arm, forearms, thigh and lower leg.
The lengthening of these bones is determined by the body's epiphyseal plates (or "growth plates") that create soft cartilage at the ends throughout puberty which then solidifies into actual hard bone.
Everything to do with your height growth is in relation to the growth plates, and so for weight lifting to stunt growth, it would have to negatively impact growth plate function in some way.
However, according to the very extensive research that has been conducted on this (references above), weight training does not damage or negatively affect growth plate function when done safely and responsibly.
The only way for the whole "weight lifting stunts growth" idea to hold any merit would be if you were to directly damage a growth plate by dropping a weight on yourself or attempting to max out with an extremely heavy weight with terrible form and physically break a bone as a result.
However, in terms of sudden/significant trauma, weight training itself is considered to be a very safe activity and is actually safer than many other activities that teens and children regularly engage in, such as sports, running, jumping, climbing etc.
So, does bodybuilding stunt growth?
There's no evidence to suggest that this should be a concern, and unless you've decided to sit on the couch and abstain from all physical activity for reasons of safety, avoiding weight lifting for that reason wouldn't make any sense.
Your final natural height will simply be a product of genetics, and outside of hormonal intervention there's really nothing you can do to control it.
