2019 Discussion Forum
Speaker: Chris Draper, Head of Animal Welfare & Captivity, Born Free Foundation
Exotic species are kept in captivity for a variety of reasons, and the popularity of exotic pets is on the rise. A lot of work has been carried out by zoos to improve the welfare standards of the species in their care. However, meeting the complex welfare needs of exotic species presents serious challenges to scientists, vets, zoo handlers, and pet owners. With the growing numbers of animals involved, it is time to consider if we can ever meet the welfare requirements of exotic animals kept in zoos and domestic settings.
In this debate we look at exotic animals in captivity, the exotic pet trade, the complex husbandry requirements of these varied animals, the suitability of current animal welfare legislation and assessment frameworks, and the role education plays in improving their welfare.
Questions to consider whilst watching:
• Does the setting i.e. zoo or for conservation vs private ownership, influence our decision making about the animal’s welfare?
• How do current debates around the keeping of exotic animals balance ethical viewpoints versus individual animal welfare?
• Aside from the welfare of individual exotic animals, what negative and positive aspects are there to keeping these animals as pets or in zoological collections?
• Can welfare compromises be justified by positive outcomes?
• Are exotic pets and zoo animals adequately protected by existing animal welfare legislation provisions?
• What impact is the exotic pet trade having on wildlife?
