BANGKOK ATTACK SUSPECT 'PART OF NETWORK'
Police say the man who placed the bomb at Bangkok’s Erawan shrine on Monday was part of a network. They released a sketch of the suspect on Wednesday. Security camera footage shows him placing a backpack on the ground and walking away just before the blast. At least 20 people died and many were injured in the attack. Meanwhile, Buddhist monks led prayers at the reopening of the shrine on Wednesday. The Erawan shrine in Bangkok’s commercial district is popular with tourists and Buddhists.
US WARNS SOUTH SUDAN OF SANCTIONS
The US is considering imposing sanctions on South Sudan if the government doesn’t sign a peace deal and hold a ceasefire within 15 days. The president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir refused to sign a peace agreement with his rival Riek Machar on Monday. He said more time was needed for negotiations. South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011. In December 2013, political rivalry between Kiir and Machar - his deputy at the time - led to civil war.
SYRIAN ARCHAEOLOGIST KILLED
ISIS has reportedly killed the scholar and archeologist Khaled Asaad. He’d looked after Roman ruins in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra. The militant group took Asaad hostage after it captured the Unesco World Heritage site earlier this year. Asaad, who was 82, had spent more than 50 years working on Palmyra. He was head of antiquities at the ancient ruins, which are considered one of the most important historic sites in the Middle East.
FARC REACHES OUT TO POPE
Colombia’s FARC fighters have asked to meet Pope Francis during his visit to Cuba in September. FARC and the Colombian government have been holding peace talks in the Cuban capital Havana since 2012. About 200-thousand people have been killed in the conflict between the two sides, which began in 1964. The Pope medi ated opening negotiations between the US and Cuba when their presidents decided to restore ties.
