Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America is a trenchant analysis of the American political system as viewed through the eyes of the author during his tour of the country during the 1830s.
The French aristocrat met with leaders and ordinary people during his trip, all the while writing down his observations. The result of his efforts is an insightful study of the unique and tragic nature of American society.
De Tocqueville's observations and critiques range from the federal to the local; he addresses everything from the judicial system and the foundational principles outlined in the Constitution to regional government and its unique characteristics.
He then discusses how these governmental structures manifest societally. From the formation of political associations to the prevalence of volunteerism, he notes that living in a democratic society has significant effects on how people structure their activities and live on a daily basis.
Life in democratic America also has demonstrable effects on the mores and values of its citizens. In de Tocqueville's view, the abstract notion of democracy has concrete, real-world consequences, both positive and negative.
French writer Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America was first published in 1835. Reeling from the political instability in his native France, de Tocqueville decided to go to the United States and study democracy. The two-volume result of his travels, Democracy in America, was an immediate success and became a landmark piece of social analysis.
The nonfiction political analysis Democracy in America contains many important ideas, including political equality, as it is the foundation for democracy; tyranny of the majority, as government by a tyrannical majority undermines democracy; mild despotism, as complacency of the people leads to authoritarian government; and mobility and change, as the American spirit embraces change, growth, and expansion.
