Finnish folk shirts are usually made out of linen and they are traditionally sewn by hand with intricate embroidery details. This shirt I made is based on an extant garment from early 19th-century Askola village in Southern Finland.
I thank Suomen kansallispukukeskus (Craft Museum of Finland) and Taina Kangas for providing me with pictures of the original shirt from Askola. The shirt itself is owned by the Finnish heritage agency. The pattern for the Askola shirt can be purchased from Taito Etelä-Suomi and the picture from the pattern is used with permission.
