Today, I'm not going to talk to you about a particular location in #FalkirkEast; rather I'm going to talk about an issue that can affect any of us in the constituency.
There was a report published on Monday showing that a third of young men between 18 and 29 have had suicidal thoughts during the pandemic. It's likely that there's been an increase in actual suicides as well.
We don't have the up-to-date statistics for Falkirk District, but in 2018, there were 24 people that took their lives. For most people it doesn't involve or go as far as contemplating #suicide, but anxiety and depression are very common and any one of us can be affected.
We turn to our doctor for help with our physical health but are reluctant to do so for our mental health. And so maybe there's still a stigma there. Your local GP can help and there's a directory of services across Falkirk District such as the Falkirk and District Association for #MentalHealth.
I was pleased to see that the Scottish Government announced a further hundred and twenty million in funding this week.
Here are five ways I keep my mental health sound.
One - connect with your friends and family,
Two - keep active, it's good for your mental wellbeing.
Three- notice what you notice. Live in the present.
Four - learn something new. Every day is a school day.
Five - give to others. It can be so rewarding. It costs nothing and sometimes this can just be a smile or a kind word.
Don't forget to tune into my Q and A with Angus McDonald MSP this Sunday at three thirty.
I'll be travelling again on Monday and in a new location.
So see you then. Bye.
