According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the refineries industry sector was the fourth largest greenhouse gas emission source in 2017. Of the refinery emission sources, valves allow more fugitive emissions into the environment than any other source. Therefore, it’s critical that new valve designs focus on reducing fugitive emissions. These new designs must be tested at realistic conditions to correctly quantify emissions and validate performance. Fugitive emissions testing has evolved along with the changing regulations, and the evolution in fugitive emissions test procedures has resulted in new challenges for test facilities. Market-driven requirements are shifting more toward fugitive emissions testing with methane gas, as opposed to helium, to create a more real-world test environment. The new test gas, and tightening requirements on allowable fugitive emissions, pose new challenges that must be overcome. A test facility must address these safety and logistical concerns to perform fugitive emissions testing correctly.
