It's the most wonderful time of the year, Bobcat Season!
This year, we are only setting about half of our traps since we are in the camper full-time and are lacking space for too many cats. Most of our cats would come from hunting with the hounds. However, we need snow to do that and we are yet to get much snow at all.
We use live cage-style traps as footholds and snare-type traps are not legal for use in Colorado. The traps are set with a cat's curiosity and enjoyment of a dark quiet space in mind!
Why do we trap? I know, they're so cute! Even if you hunt deer or elk, a lot of people are not fans of us hunting and trapping cats.
Here's the thing, every species of animal will overpopulate, and the local Division of Wildlife determines how many we can take and will absolutely lower the numbers if too many are being harvested. We currently have no limit on bobcats to be harvested per year but part of that has to do with how elusive and hard to catch they are.
If a species overpopulates, the prey/food numbers go down, disease can become a big problem, chicken coops everywhere suffer, and in the end, the cats suffer too. The ethical hunting and trapping of any animal is always more humane than what nature can do to them if their numbers are unsustainable.
On top of that, we will feed the dogs with the meat and receive a side income from hunting and trapping that we count on every year. Not a single thing goes to waste on these cats! The skulls, teeth, and claws can be kept or sold for decoration. The carcass goes to our beloved doggos. The hide we will either keep to make things out of and then sell or sell to an auction.
Hunting and trapping these guys protects them from becoming a nuisance on farms with small livestock, continues century-old traditions, and is done in a responsible manner.
I hope the above helps people understand why we love doing this and will continue to do it and fight for the right to do it! If not, feel free to ask questions. I am more than willing to discuss everything we do, especially in hunting and trapping.
At the end of the day, we will not trap very many cats. I will be absolutely pleased with 1 or 2 cats in the whole 3 month season!
I hope you enjoy today's video and don't forget to like and subscribe!!
