About this video: If you are thinking about buying an automatic watch, you may be wonder what you need to know before doing so. Well, in this video, we go over what you should know before you purchase your first automatic watch.
First things first, I want to point out that most people are just guessing. Here’s what I mean by that. In researching this video, I discovered articles that recommended winding an automatic watch fully and just winding it a few times before setting it.
Overall, this is a good practice, and before you set your watch, you should wind it a few times, I personally recommend 10-20 winds. This prevents you from damaging the watch or movement and ensures that things are working as they should before you set the watch.
However, the fact that everyone seems to recommend something a bit different here shows that a lot of people are just guessing as to what you should do, and with that, I think they scare a lot of people off from this amazing hobby.
Our goal here is to do the exact opposite of that - we want to bring as many people into watches as possible. And assuming you are just getting into watches, it is worth mentioning that automatic watches can sometimes be called mechanical watches.
However, not all mechanical watches are automatic. Automatic watches have a rotating weight in the watch that winds it and keeps it running. The weight rotates throughout the day as you move your wrist.
The other kind of mechanical watch features a hand-winding movement that can only be powered by winding the crown.
Automatic watches can also be wound using the crown, something you should do before setting the time, but hand-wound watches can only be powered manually by winding them.
Something else I want to note about setting the watch is that it is recommended to not set your watches if the time is between 11 and noon when the date is changing. This is because some watches can be damaged by this. With that being said, I have never really cared about this, so I guess this is a do as I say, not as I do moment.
Now, you may be wondering why we have talked so much about setting the watch when the goal of an automatic watch is that you don’t have to set it often. Well, unless you only plan on having one automatic watch you wear truly every day, you will probably be setting your watch a lot.
I have 6 automatic watches currently, and the longest power reserve one has is 90 hours. The shortest is 48 hours. Meaning that if I wanted to keep all of my watches running simply by wearing them, I would have to do some very careful schedule if it was even possible.
There are winders that you can get if you want to keep your watches running when you aren’t wearing them, but overall those really aren’t worth it, especially for a beginner.
Speaking of something many beginners don’t think about when it comes to automatic and all mechanical watches, they require maintenance.
If you ask most watch manufacturers, they will tell you to expect to send your watch back in for service every 5 to 10 years. As far as cost goes, this is usually around $500 to $1,000 depending on the brand and movement in your watch.
Don’t let service scare you off, though. If you buy a watch new, you are a long way away from getting it serviced, and if you do have an issue within the first few years, the watch is usually covered under warranty.
However, we may have missed some stuff that you should know before purchasing your first automatic watch. If you are a watch veteran, let us know in the comments what you wish you had known before buying an automatic watch. Let's make the comments a great resource for new watch collectors.
