Technical skills are not enough to deliver value to customers!
Here are 3 essential skills every consultant needs:
1. communication
This is the number 1 most important skill.
Consultants need technical expertise. But they also need to know how to
- translate technical stuff into something understandable for the customer.
- effectively communicate to the customer what they are doing.
2. listening
Consulting often is copy-pasting things that have been done before.
But if you listen carefully to the customer's pain points, needs, and expectations, you can tweak your presentation and give relatable examples.
This will make it tangible for the customer.
3. expectation management
If there are any problems in a project, expectations between both parties are not aligned.
To build trust and alignment, consultants need to be realistic in what they communicate and deliver on their commitments.
I believe those 3 skills are key to successfully delivering projects and bringing value to the customer.
