Britain should "prepare for bad news ahead" on the Algerian hostage crisis, the prime minister has said.

David Cameron was speaking after it was revealed that Downing Street was not informed in advance of an operation by Algerian forces to free hostages and end the siege by Islamist militants at a gas facility in Algeria.

A British citizen and an Algerian were killed on Wednesday. Two unnamed people from Scotland and an Irishman, 36-year-old Stephen McFaul, have reportedly been released.
