Video on the Battle of Vukovar, which took place between the 25th of August and the 18th of November, 1991. It pitted the Yugoslav People’s Army with the help of a few Serbian militias against the newly-formed Croatian National Guard.
The town of Vukovar was a multi-ethnic city prior to the war, both of Serbs, Croats, and other groups which contributed to the bitter fighting that ensued in the city.
Interestingly, you can find news reports from Croatian and Serbian television channels from the time that basically mirror each other in placing war crime accusations on one another. In reality, both sides were responsible for war crimes over the course of the battle, although the treatment of Croatian civilians and prisoners alike by Serbian forces, especially nationalist paramilitaries, in the wake of the battle is quite well known.
Despite this video being on the longer side, I still had a bunch of footage I wish I could’ve included, but I’m mostly happy with what I made, I tried to take a more serious tone with this, especially when compared to my last video, and I also tried to use lesser seen footage from the battle. There’s lots of interesting clips you can find: Croatian soldiers firing an M60 LMG, both sides using PPSh-41s, and the only clips I’ve seen from the war so far of a ZSU-57-2 firing. Hope you enjoy!
