If you're interested in creating your own homemade Bate for surf fishing, you can experiment with making bait strips / balls using natural or homemade ingredients. Here's a simple recipe to try:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of fresh fish or shrimp (can be minced or finely chopped)
- 1/2 cup of bread crumbs
- 1/4 cup of cornmeal
- 1 tablespoon of fish oil or vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon of salt
- Optional: Additional scents or flavors such as crushed garlic, minced onions, or fish attractants
Instructions:
1. In a mixing bowl, combine the fresh fish or shrimp, bread crumbs, cornmeal, fish oil or vegetable oil, salt, and any optional scents or flavors you want to add. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
2. Adjust the consistency by adding small amounts of water if needed. The mixture should be moist enough to hold together but not overly wet.
3. Roll the mixture into small strips or shape them into desired bait sizes.
4. Place the bait strips on a greased baking sheet or tray.
5. Preheat your oven to a low temperature, around 250°F (120°C), and bake the bait strips for approximately 1-2 hours. The aim is to dry them out and firm them up, rather than cook them.
6. Once the bait strips are dry and firm, remove them from the oven and let them cool completely.
7. Store the homemade bait strips in an airtight container or sealable bag until ready to use for surf fishing.
It's important to keep in mind that homemade bait strips may not have the same durability, scent, or texture as commercial fish bites. Therefore, their effectiveness may vary. It's always a good idea to test them out in different fishing conditions and be prepared with alternative bait options to maximize your chances of success.
