A national referendum in Cuba on Sunday drew high levels of participation from the citizenry, who voted to amend the country's family code to allow for legal same-sex marriage. The new legislation now extends protection to members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community, who are now regarded as minorities in Cuba.
