(17 May 2018) A 50-carat white diamond fetched 6.5 million Swiss francs (US dollars) at a Christie's jewellery auction in Geneva on Wednesday.
The auctioneer said an anonymous trader snapped up the piece looking for access to a rare stone.
The Harry Winston-crafted diamond ring was the top lot of an auction of hundreds of items up for sale at Christie's spring auction in Geneva.
A fancy vivid yellow diamond ring of 20.49 carats garnered about 5.5 million US dollars - achieving a near record price per carat, the auction house said.
The price for the yellow diamond ring, which included the buyer's premium, easily eclipsed the expected range for a hammer price of up to 4.5 million US dollars.
Rahul Kadakia, head of international jewellery at Christie's, trumpeted a "monster price" per carat for the yellow diamond.
He said the overall "magnificent jewels" sale fetched about US81 million US dollars.
