How to Get Bokeh Explained:

1. Low F Stop

Our first way on how to get a blurry background photo or video is to use a low aperture. Typically, lower f. stops are found on lenses of a single focal length, also known as prime lenses (i.e. a 50mm at f1.4 or an 85mm at f1.8). These lenses are typically less expensive than a zoom lens with a lower f stop (i.e a 24-70mm lens at f2.8) and create more bokeh naturally!

I typically frame the shots really tight with whatever I want to be the focus, in the centre.

One thing you need to take into consideration is your distance. Typically I am really close to my subject which is giving me this blur, but once I back up to a wider shot it’s harder to pick out what exactly is in focus.

Which brings us to the 2nd way to achieve this effect - shooting from far away on a longer lens.

There is a common misconception that a lower aperture will always make your video cinematic; however, the issue with this is that the lower the aperture/f stop, the less is going to be in focus and the Bokeh effect might ruin your shot! Which brings us to the 2nd way to achieve this effect - shooting from far away on a longer lens.


2. Focal Length

Let’s remember that increasing the focal length (going from a 35mm to 200mm for example) means that we are also decreasing the depth of field (the distance that’s in focus has larger gaps now that you’re zoomed in to a greater distance/tighter shot).

So let’s address the issue that we have with the shorter lens; once you get further back, you’re including too much of the frame in your focus. The great thing about a zoom lens is that because of its compression, you can still isolate your subject and get more of them in focus in the same sort of scenario.

Now, this is a great way to easily have a shot in focus AND get that bokeh that we’re looking for,

However, if you saved up for your first high-end camera, something like the a7iii (I am not advertising that the a7iii bokeh is better than any other camera) and a zoom lens just isn’t in the budget, which makes total sense, I still want you to be able to have this effect! No matter what camera or lens we have, we can still create this effect!

3. In Post

I was editing this video from my recent trip to India and I really wanted to switch up the framing and get a super tight shot of something but I didn’t have the right lens or opportunity to get that kind of shot in detail.
So I created a shot entirely in post-production when I got home. This Bokeh movie effect and transition can be created with 3 shots: 2 shots that you took, and a 3rd stock element.

All I had to do was add a fake blur on the clips behind the stock shot, and then fade them together. The viewer is distracted because of the bokeh and t is the power of focus, the shots seamlessly blend together because they are in the background!

In another, example, all I did was create an adjustment layer, add a fake motion blur (bokeh effect) on top of him, and cropped him out of the shot!

I hope this tutorial gives you some inspiration to pay more attention to how you use storytelling elements in your video, and just to get cooler shots no matter what lens you are using!
