I get questions about removing vinyl wrap...is it hard to do, does it come off easily, does it hurt the paint, etc.
This video shows that it is (generally) easy to remove vinyl wrap, even after 2 years of being on. In this example, I'm removing Vvivid XPO series matte metallic blue after 2 years of installation on a 1998 Subaru Legacy Wagon. The car and paint are 20 years old, and the vinyl came off easily.
Factors that contributed to the ease of removal:
- Prep of the paint before installation (very thorough cleaning with alcohol wipedown)
- Ambient temperature--it was about 85 degrees F when I removed this vinyl. Colder temps make vinyl brittle and more difficult to remove. You may need a heat source (heat gun, hair dryer, hand torch, etc.) for some heat as needed to make the vinyl more pliable.
- Pulling the vinyl slowly and consistently
Disclaimer: Not all vinyls pull off this easily. There are many different factors that affect removal. The bottomline is that vinyl wrap is designed to be removable, even after a few years of installation.
