Set dramatically on the coastal clifftops of Cornwall, Tintagel Castle is linked to myth and legend. Scale the mighty ruins that has inspired writers, artists and royalty for centuries.
The site of Tintagel Castle has been inhabited at least since the late Roman period, but it was during the 12th century that it became iconic. Geoffrey of Monmouth named it as the place where King Arthur was conceived and these Arthurian associations may have inspired Richard, Earl of Cornwall, to build a castle at Tintagel in the 1230s.
Regardless, Tintagel is an enchanting site for visitors. See artefacts discovered at the site and an innovative 3D model of the headland's development through time. Outside climb the 148 steps on to the island to pass through the wooden door into what was the Great Hall built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, then explore the beach below.
