STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Tibetan exiles and Buddhist monks and nuns protested in the Nepalese capital on Saturday, chanting slogans against China and demanding an end to Chinese rule over their homeland.
Police did not try to stop the 500 protesters from marching in the Boudhanath area on the eastern outskirts of Kathmandu.
The protesters demonstrated around the main Buddhist shrine in the area.
The protests came as China marked 50 years of direct control over Tibet on Saturday with a newly created holiday, crowned "Serf's Liberation Day."
March 28 marks the date Beijing crushed the 1959 Tibetan uprising, sending the Dalai Lama over the Himalayas into exile and placing Tibet under its direct rule for the first time.
The Nepalese police had been ordered to stop all Tibetan street protests against China and detain anyone who defied the order, but demonstrators stayed near the Buddhist shrine.
Protesters would only be stopped or detained if they entered public streets, said a Kathmandu police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to talk to reporters.
Nepal had stepped up security around the Chinese embassy and visa offices, posting hundreds of police around the buildings. Traffic was also diverted from the area to prevent a protest.
There have been few Tibetan protests in Nepal this year. Last year saw almost daily protests from Tibetans who often clashed with police and were detained by the hundreds.
Thousands of Tibetan refugees live in Nepal, while thousands more are allowed to pass through Nepal on their way to Dharmsala, India where their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, lives in exile.
