film shows: cypriot students in an anti-american demonstration after united states moves towards lifting the us arms embargo on turkey
lead in: president spyros kyprianou of cyprus on thursday (april 6) welcomed the new united states ambassador, galen luther stone, to the island -- but at the same time warned that the lifting of the us arms embargo against turkey would endanger the independence of cyprus.
the arms embargo was imposed after the turkish invasion of cyprus in 1974, equipped mainly with american equipment, since when the turks have maintained a strong military presence and have virtually turned the northern half of the island into a separate turkish cypriot state. the fear of the greek cypriots is that a lifting of the us arms embargo, as proposed by the carter administration, would encourage turkey in its aggressive policies and would make an eventual reunification of the greek and turkish cypriot parts of the island even more difficult.
in reply to the cypriot president, the new us ambassador mr stone said that although us-cypriot relations were "somewhat strained", the us government remains "strongly committed to a just and lasting solution to the cyprus problem".
there have meanwhile been anti-american demonstrations in nicosia over the issue of the proposed lifting of the arms embargo.

commentary: a large and mainly young crowd of greek cypriots gathered in nicosia on wednesday (april 5), carrying placards and banners with mottos like "carter- where are your promises", and "peanuts is not politics".
the greek cypriots warmly welcomed jimmy carter's election to the presidency, but with the us administration's decision to ask congress to remove the us arms embargo on turkey, the mood has turned sour in nicosia.
the march was orderly, but noisy, as the demonstrators made their way to the united states embassy, to make their feelings known. naturally, the greek cypriots want the arms embargo against turkey to be maintained.
police were out in force around the american embassy to prevent any major incident, and heavy barbed-wire barriers were erected. but there was no attempt to tear them down, and the security measures were seen as successful.
an embassy spokesman said a small group of students were allowed through the cordon to present a petition at the gate of the five-storey sandstone building, and later the demonstrators dispersed peacefully.
