Riding in Santiago, Chile. After a few times taking this route, most exceptions, unfinished, ill-conceived, and simply broken crossings, dangerous and non-functional routings, and unannounced and unexpected trail ends, blockages, and interruptions have been figured out, the ride can be brisk and fun.
Unfortunately bike trails, like pedestrian walkways, are poorly planned and executed. Typically, things are functional for a block or two where some visiting dignitary might see them , and unfinished, squalid, or broken just around the bend. Crossings on one side of a roadway where there is no corresponding access on the other side are common. A lot of time is wasted doing double-back intersection crossings and dealing with broken and discontinued bike-lanes and sidewalks, and with pedestrian and bicycle lanes switching from one side of the road to the other. As you can see, the 'politicians' have no qualms impeding pedestrian and bicycle access to get the attention of people in cars.
