Influenced by the Japanese Shinto concept of ma, Kaneko states, "Ma is not the object but the
space or consciousness in between." His compositions of vertical and horizontal lines exceed our
fundamental understanding of shape and proportion. Kaneko's audacious use of vivid colors and
three-dimensional patterns brings the surface of his work to life, activating and amplifying his
compositions in multidimensional ways, perpetually resonating within the liminal. This command of
material mass and immaterial fluctuation expands beyond the definitive and brings new capacity
to our perception of space.
Kaneko was born in Nagoya, Japan, in 1942 and moved to the United States at the age of 21. He
has permanent large installations around the globe, and his artworks are housed in over 70
museums worldwide, including the Corning Museum of Glass in New York and the Smithsonian
American Art Museum in Washington, DC. In 1998, Kaneko and his wife, Ree, established a nonprofit cultural organization, KANEKO, in Omaha, NE, aiming to serve as an open space for creativity.
